Trees down (missed the truck bythismuch! Our entry sign was pulled up out of the ground and the trees were stripped of their leaves! We had a building blow over the fence and into the neighbors yard, and our security fence is leaning over.

The best news is that all of the animals are safe and sound. Luckily they were able to find shelter from the rain, wind and hail in their warm up houses. Each cage has a house attached that they can get into during bad weather. The monkeys were subdued today; they knew something unusual had happened.

Linda and I had been praying for rain, but when it comes in a torrent it doesn't do much but damage! We had some volunteers out last week and they had laid down some wonderful chip paths and they have now been washed away.

If anyone would like to come help cut down trees and rake leaves, please contact us by email or phone. My email is nancy.mmps@gmail.com. As in over 105 degrees every day for 5 days! Tomorrow we cool down to a cool 101! Yea!

That kind of heat makes for miserable monkeys and caretakers alike!
Linda and I keep hydrated thanks to a donation of a sports drink and plenty of water. Starting very early helps too. The monkeys have water checked and filled 3 times a day and are treated to cool oranges in the evenings. Their activity is very limited. They lie around waiting for someone to turn the heat down.

I feel the most sorry for the research girls, Olive and Pickles! Image going from a climate controlled environment to this heat! We caught Pickles holding the spigot of her water bottle down and playing in the dripping water. We have had to add a water bucket to their enclosure to ensure they have enough to drink!

We look forward to a cool down of over 15 degrees this weekend. Hurray.

Lots done Today!

Thanks to our great volunteer Heather, we got a lot accomplished even in the oppressive Oklahoma heat today. Starting at 7am Heather and I carted wheelbarrows full of chips to 2 large enclosures. This might not sound like much, but it was 6 trips each, shoveling them in carting them to the cage then dumping them out and raking them into place! Hot work I can assure you.

After cleaning climbing structures and shelves and replacing well loved toys with new, we were able to let the monks back into their clean enclosures. Lots of squealing and playing and searching ensued! They always check out their favorite places to see what we have done to their "stuff."

Tomorrow our other great volunteer, my hubby John, will make some much needed cage repair and build a climbing structure for Spock, Mia, and Peaches, our Java Macaque clan. Their current climbing structure has seen much better days and will be replaced with new. Look for pictures soon!

Welcome to my blog!

Welcome to my first blog!

The purpose of this blog is for you monkey lovers to get a view into Mindy's Memory Primate Sanctuary. When I get Linda set up, both of us will be able to share monkey news or a picture or two when something happens.

Right now we are battling the heat. 101 today folks! But monkeys still need feeding and cages cleaned! We just received two large truckloads of wood chips from the electric company and we are working to get it into the cages.
